Australian Bedding & Bed Linen Sizes - BEDROCKS

Hi everyone! I am about to pull the trigger on my first apartment, and to celebrate will be making a bedframe and buying a mattress. I think this one will do nicely.
I have come up with a bill of materials for a frame sized for a queen mattress, and will soon purchase materials for the project.
On to the design: In the original, 2x8's support a 2x4 platform, with an OSB/ply sheet for the mattress to rest upon. As many have commented, this may mold.
Instead of drilling holes in the platform, (tedious and wasteful), I plan to make my own slats from 1x4 stock, like this lady did.
In order to do this properly, I decided it would be a good idea to alter the platform to allow for the slats to flex, namely by supporting them at the edges and down the middle of the bed. They will rest directly on three planks laying on top of the 2x4" platform. Around the perimeter of the platform I will be substituting 2x6 or 2x8 for the 2x4, to make sure the mattress and slats can't go anywhere. I will probably make 30 slats to the example's 24, each slat covering half the width of the mattress itself. Having extra, I can play around with the number, and balance springiness against tendency to hit the underlying platform structure. I think I will opt for a foam mattress, and want to be able to reduce the spacing if it is necessary.
Unlike the example, I plan to three-quarters-ass the job, and pocket-drill the butt joints that will otherwise leave visible screw holes. I don't have the tools or skills to make fancy-pants joints.
The most visible part of the bed (in its first incarnation it will not have the 6" flare like the example, but I may build this on at a later date) is the edges of the platform that will lie flush to the dimensions of the mattress above it. For now, my requirement is for a seamless exterior that can be disassembled, and the option to add-on things like a headboard or floating side-tables. The cantilever on the latter will need some thinking though.
I am debating whether to wax with tung oil and beeswax to go the natural look, or spring for a greyish matte stain to avoid looking too rustic. Kinda like this. I was also thinking of trying the vinegar and iron method, but don't trust it'll be truly dark enough.
Once I decide whether or not I will add a platform around the edge of the bed, a headboard will be made to fit the new (or not) width of the bed, which will attach to the platform at the edges and the support in the middle underneath the bed.
Would #8 screws be adequate in this application? Comments? Feedback? Thanks for looking
